Wireless Networking.
A relatively new networking topology is 802.11b/g or n, also known as Wireless or "WiFi." This topology allows connecting computers together without using wires. Wireless networks are currently the fastest growing networking topology in the U.S. and the U.K.; users can establish a wireless network without running cables between their computers. Wireless also allows a user with a laptop the freedom to roam about his house or lawn and still maintain access to the Internet, as well as to the rest of his network. This solution is more elegant than Ethernet when the computers are far apart from each other or from the cable modem.
At Caucasus Associates, our philosophy is to configure the Wireless properly the FIRST time, EVERY time... no slowdowns, no chatter from the neighbors' routers, no noise... just the right topology for the situation with the proper hardware at a reasonable price. With Wireless, there is no substitute for experience and understanding. Is wireless right for your home or office? Let us do an analysis today.
Ethernet Networking.
Ethernet, along with its speedier counterpart "Fast Ethernet," is the most popular networking standard in use today. If the computers at your workplace are running on a network, they are most likely connected with Ethernet technology.
Ethernet networks are generally faster than the alternatives, although newer technologies like 802.11a are closing the speed gap. Because Ethernet is so popular, simple, and reliable, the essential components of Ethernet networking are readily available and surprisingly inexpensive.
To configure and install an Ethernet or Fast Ethernet network in your home, you will need one Ethernet (or Fast Ethernet) network card or adapter per computer. Ethernet network cards are installed inside your computer, while network adapters are connected externally. You will also need at least one hub or switch to act as the centre of your network, as seen in the diagram below. Unlike a Telephone network, you can't string the computers of an Ethernet network directly into one another. They must connect at a central point.
Special cabling (known as Category 5 UTP) is required to build an Ethernet network. One end of an RJ-45 cable plugs directly into a computer's Ethernet network card or adapter; the other end plugs into a switch, hub, or similar device, connecting that computer to the other networked computers.
Ethernet or Fast Ethernet networking is the best home networking solution if speed is your primary networking concern. Obviously, there are hybrid topologies where wireless and fixed-Ethernet are combined to provide an optimal solution for your home or business. Let Caucasus Associates networking solutions configure an optimal solution for your particular needs, home or business.
Powerline Networking.
Powerline networking is a technology that's capable of transforming an in-house mains power circuit into a home or business networking infrastructure. The concept of using electrical cabling for transporting data isn't a new one. The mains wiring in the average home or business premises can support a variety of frequencies. As electricity uses 50/60Hz signals, extra data can be transported along the same wiring at a higher frequency, without causing any interference.
Each device on a Powerline network requires its own adapter. Each adapter features a familiar Ethernet socket and has its own MAC address. You simply install the configuration software on a PC or Mac, then connect the Powerline adapters to the devices that you want to network (using standard Ethernet cables). Plug the adapters into the mains and that's it - instant networking.
There are tremendous possibilities here. Link your ADSL modem router in the living room or your business comms room to a Powerline adapter and you can pipe full-fat broadband to any mains socket in the house or office. Got a digital media adapter? Why rely on the up-and-down signal strength of a wireless network to stream MP3s , WMAs or important office data when Powerline networking will give you a rock-solid connection?
Think of it this way, two Powerline adapters replace 15 metres or so of Ethernet cable. It's an invisible, reliable and trouble-free networking solution. This technology could prove instrumental in the development of home networking and the connected entertainment. Are Powerline adapters right for your home or office? Let us do an analysis today. |
